I had a feeling this morning – the clouds were thick and low and I knew there’d be no sunrise to speak of. I decided to drive up the mountains to the Sallygap, to this forest that I love. I’ve only ever been in three cloud forests – two in Ireland, one in the Lake District. As I drove up the winding roads before dawn, leaning forward over the wheel, straining to see the road beyond ten yards…I was hopeful. Lough Teagh was completely invisible, lost behind an infinite wall of grey that seemed to swallow up the world. When I got to the end of the road and parked, this wildwood I love was full of swirling cloud. At the end of two hours I couldn’t feel my fingers and I was drenched to the skin, but it was worth it.
